We've just heard that the Haven House Children's Hospice collections at nearly 40 venues over the Christmas period totalled a magnificent £16,100! Their aim was to collect £10,000, so what a fantastic result!

Linda McArdell, a volunteer with the Woodland Trust, gave us a fascinating talk about the origins of the Woodland Trust and explained why its work is so important. She told us that over the years vast woodland areas have been destroyed, until now woodland comprises only 4% of the UK and only half of that is Ancient Woodland, i.e. woodland that has existed for over 400 years. The Woodland Trust's mission is to create new woodlands and rescue and restore areas that have been damaged or planted with non-native species. As well as planting native trees, this also involves reintroducing native woodland flowers such as bluebells, and rare plants such as Dog Mercury, as well as planting wildflower meadows. These woodlands and meadows will provide habitats for all kinds of animals, birds and insects, including rare butterflies. The Woodland Trust's latest project is Heartwood Forest near St Albans. It covers a large area which includes four areas of ancient woodland. Since acquiring Heartwood Forest the Trust has planted over 500,000 trees, with the help of local school children and other volunteers, and created wildflower meadows and an orchard. They are hoping that this whole area will become a wildlife haven. The work of the Trust is mainly carried out by their 2000 volunteers and what they have achieved is really inspiring. I think many of our members would like to make a trip to see Heartwood Forest and hopefully, we'll be able to arrange one later in the year. |
