Joe gave us a very interesting talk about the hidden gardens and spaces in our city, which included fascinating facts about life in London under the Romans and Henry VIII, and glimpses of hidden historical remains amongst all the new modern developments.
Photos showed how mediaeval walls were built over the remains of Roman ones, and Elizabethan on top of those to form a varied layer-cake of building styles. We saw the old churches, plaques commemorating local heroes, statues of gardeners and printers and peaceful green spaces like secret oases, tucked away, mostly out of sight of the bustling crowds and non-stop traffic.
It was a fascinationg insight into a more private, secret London and made you want to see and learn more about these hidden treasures.
