Please see the new photos added to the 7th June Open Garden Day blog post. The new photos were taken when the crowds had gone, so you can get a much clearer idea of what the garden looks like.

Nick Dobson gave us a very interesting talk about his favourite flowers - Dahlias, Pelargoniums and Fuchsias. He told us a little about their origins - some were incredibly ancient - evidence of their existence found from 9 million year ago! He told us a bit about those who discovered them, and showed us some wonderful slides of the very many beautiful and diverse varieties that have been developed over the years, including some new varieties he'd developed himself - one called 'My Mum' which was very popular on Mother's Day! He also gave some very useful advice on growing and propagating them and how to keep white fly at bay.
Nick also brought along a selection of his plants for sale and after his talk members descended on these like hoards of locusts and snapped them up in no time at all! We went along to see Chatu's Open Garden last Sunday. Not hard to find - you just had to follow the music! Photographers for a gardening programme were due and a spontaneous street party had sprung up in the little close. The garden is a real 'pocket handkerchief' and very shady with masses of plantings and a little path winding its way through to a decking area for sitting out. There were lots of visitors - and we found other Gardening Friends members enjoying tea and Chatu's delicious cake - Chatu had anticipated about 50, but actually 220 turned up! Terry and I went back to have another look when it was less crowded and Terry took these lovely photos. |
