A few of the gardening club members visited Capel Manor last weekend. Harold tried out a mobility scooter - I think he liked it eventually! We had a look at the Fuchsia Festival display, (plants, cakes and books were also on sale there), then had a quick look at the animal section, but most were out of sight, probably very wisely trying to keep cool in their dens. After a break for refreshments - (it was VERY hot!), we strolled around the gardens then round the big lake with the fountain and the Koi carp. There are some really lovely gardens there, many with areas where visitors can sit and relax in the shade and even bring a picnic. Our annual Mini Show with Strawberries & Cream was last Thursday and I'm sure was enjoyed by all! There were less flower entries this year in the Single Rose, Mixed Flower Arrangements and the Single Specimen Flower categories, as the extreme weather had finished them off much earlier than in past years. However, it was a bumper year for fruit and we definitely had many more vegetable entries than in past years. The Potted Plant category, resurrected by popular demand, attracted quite a few entries and the Miniature Flower Arrangement category had the added excitement of a whole miniature garden! Gerald excelled himself and won a special (one-off) prize for his originality. A big Thank You to Graham Deal, our judge, to Kathleen & Audrey for strawberry and cream preparation, to Phil and Sylvia for the refreshments, to Joan for buying and wrapping all the prizes and to Stan for setting everything up for us, and to everyone else who helped and all our members for taking part in the competitions and making it such a good afternoon!
