We've just heard that the Haven House Children's Hospice collections at nearly 40 venues over the Christmas period totalled a magnificent £16,100! Their aim was to collect £10,000, so what a fantastic result!

Some of you may know that we occasionally donate to Haven House Children's Hospice. To see photos taken at their Open Gardens Launch in May this year, please click on the 'Haven House' link under 'Categories' on right hand side. Recently they told us they were trying to raise £10,000 over Christmas via their first "festive Bucket-a-thon across nearly 40 London venues". As one of these was our local M&S, I joined another volunteer and her son last Wednesday (14th December) to wave our collection buckets at the early evening shoppers. M&S shoppers were very generous with their donations and M&S treated us to hot chocolate and biscuits! As we finished our stint around 6.30pm, the Haven House Choir arrived to take over the collection with added entertainment (we hadn't been singing). Together, we and the choir raised a total of £239.72. We'll let you know what their final total is for all the London venues. You may remember that Lindy Hunt from the Haven House Children's Hospice came to our April meeting and told us about their Open Gardens Launch in May. A friend and I went along to Haven House at South Woodford on 7th May to see the gardens. Haven House seems mainly to provide respite care for children with life limiting conditions and will take the children for up to 20 days and nights a year. The hospice itself is a beautiful building, though we didn't look inside, but did talk to parents of one of the children using the facilities, and they were very enthusiastic about the standard of care their child receives there. There is a nice woodland area with lots of bluebells and a wonderful playground with special rubberised chippings on the ground which makes it safer for children and, as one of the mothers told us, makes it much easier to push wheelchairs. There was also a special swing large enough to take a whole wheelchair. The helpers were very welcoming and there were raffles and plant sales and tea and sandwiches to purchase. The sun was shining so we sat and had our refreshments and enjoyed the friendly, relaxed atmosphere. |
