Alison Green from Theobalds Farmhouse Garden was our speaker today. She told us how they had started out in 1999 when they bought the farmhouse with two acres of land, mainly grass with some old fruit trees, a drainage ditch and a small area of woodland. She described the gradual transformation she and her team accomplished, turning that neglected site into the wonderfully diverse garden experience it is today. Slides showed the 'before' and 'after' views which made very clear the immense amount of work involved and Alison shared the ideas behind each of the many very distinct gardens she has created there. The gardens are designed to provide an ever changing visual experience throughout the year. Last year a large group from Gardening Friends visited in May (see Gardening Friends Outing 2015 for more photos) and this year we're returning in June, so we're expecting to see a lot of changes. Of course, we also all look forward to the tea and home-made cakes at the end of the tour, and as a plus the delicious home-made jams and chutneys for sale! |
