Volunteers from the 23,000 membership are trained in maintenance jobs for the upkeep of the sites. These might include clearing chalk streams of silt, cutting reed beds, or mowing wildflower meadows. The aim is to bring wildlife back from the brink and H&MWT has succeeded in improving the outlook for populations of water vole, the small blue butterfly, lapwings and rare wild orchids.
